The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) has instructed Babboe to stop selling cargo bikes because their safety cannot be sufficiently guaranteed.
The Babboe cargo bike recall has significantly expanded in scope and complexity since the initial reports. The Dutch manufacturer has issued a recall for several models, including the City, City E, Mini, and Mini E, due to concerns that their safety cannot be guaranteed.

This is not the first time a safety warning has been issued by the manufacturer.
This decision came after the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) directed Babboe to halt sales until they could sufficiently prove the safety of these models. This directive was based on numerous reports of frame failures and the company's inadequate response to these incidents. Babboe has acknowledged these safety concerns and is offering replacements or suitable alternatives to affected customers, along with compensation for the inconvenience caused.
The situation has garnered widespread attention, with over 8,500 individuals responding to a call from the law firm Birkway, which is investigating the possibility of compensation for affected owners, including those in countries outside of the Netherlands like France and Germany. This recall not only impacts customers but also raises significant legal and regulatory questions regarding product safety and manufacturer responsibility.

The "Cargobikegate" scandal may spread to other manufacturers as Dutch authorities are investigating issues with other brands: "Based on news coverage by RTL, in addition to many reports about Babboe cargo bikes, several reports have been received about other brands. We still have to investigate these to decide whether there is any reason to expand our investigation. If consumers experience similar problems, we ask them to report this using the form on our website."
