Transporting cinema equipment on an e-bike across deserts, mountains, and headwinds tested me physically and mentally, especially given my own limitations. Yet the most lasting memories are not of hardship, but of the people we encountered.
This is not a traditional documentary review, since we produced “Only Lazy Americans E-Bike” ourselves. But it is a reflection we share with genuine pride in what the film has become.
When E-bike Lovers began filming, we knew the project would be deeply personal. The title grew out of a stereotype we felt compelled to confront as a community. An environmentalist once dismissed e-bikes as “another toy for fat, lazy Americans.” That phrase lingered with us. We set out to test it against reality.

What we found on the road across the United States was the opposite of that prejudice. We met veterans with amputations rediscovering motion, firefighters honoring the memory of 9/11 through long commemorative rides, and individuals facing chronic conditions who used new technology not as a shortcut, but as a bridge back to strength and community.

Again and again, we saw how innovation expanded possibilities rather than diminishing effort.
Our goal as filmmakers and the e-biking community was to capture both endurance and empathy. The documentary is not simply a record of miles pedaled; it is a collection of human stories that challenge assumptions and reframe what mobility can mean.
