It is estimated that 130 million electric bicycles will be sold globally between 2020 and 2023. More than 12 million electric bicycles (e-bikes) are estimated to be sold in the United States between 2020 and 2030. This is an enormous number of batteries we need to keep out of landfills.
Currently, there is no system in place for e-bikers to return used batteries to retailers for safe processing and recycling. PeopleforBikes, the cycling industry group has developed an industry-wide program to resolve that problem.
An Industry-Wide Recycling Program
PeopleforBikes has teamed up with Call2Recycle, a leading not-for-profit battery logistics, and recycling organization, to establish an industry-wide e-bike battery recycling program in the United States.

At E-bike Lovers, we fully support any initiative that reduces the carbon footprint of e-biking. The recycling of end-of-life e-bikes and batteries is an important aspect of protecting and preserving the environment through responsible end-of-life management.
What Does This Mean for E-bikers?
Starting February 2022, we will start to see collection sites across the U.S. where we can take e-bike batteries for recycling. E-bike Lovers will list locations, including e-bike shops in the DMV area, on its website as they become available.
Call2Recycle and PeopleForBikes will be launching an awareness campaign in September 2022.
